essay on hollyoaks representation of relationships
Through out Hollyoaks we are introduced to many personalities, all in which represent issues in soiety as well as normal things that occur in real life.
In this episode specifically we face issues such as abuse which is a cause for concern within society, especially abuse in relationships. We see a wide varity of techniques in order to convey these convesions such as mise en scene, camera angles, camera shots and more.
The lighting is very dim which creates a very cossy, sensual atmosphere but it also foreshadows something dark and sinister in the room. Although the lighting is harsh on both characters we see a light hit the side of maxine's face which shows the remaining innocent side of her, as she is the victim and cannot repent as she is in to deep in to a violent relationship. We beginning by seeing maxines face clearly with the light on her face to represent her angelic, naieve, innocense. The use of close up, mid shot angle helps us see the full expression on Maxine's face to show her reaction between then and when patrick takes hold of her phone. This helps the audience realise that it can be any normal person because we see with Maxine's direct mood of address that she wasn't even expecting that her self. We then continue with a fast motivational cut straight to Patrick as soon as we here the non diogetic, voice over noise of a mobile phone. We instantly know its a mobile phone because we recognise the tone as though it were a slogan of sound within the brand of the mobile. This creates fluency and suspense as the cuts in this clip are very fast.
When we cut we go into a long shot where we can see both Maxine and Patrick. The camera is blurred out on Maxine which allows the audience to identify with Maxine's as she may feel insignificant which some will realise is a sign of neglect.
At the begining the location is very typical of a middle class flat with a happy couple, one being young and the other much senior. This helps the character contrast just how normal your settings can be and where this sort of abuse can occur. It brings it much closer to home helping the audience understand that it can happen anywhere and with anyone no matter how wealthy or how 'happy' you think you maybe.

| Box office | $64,238,440 ProductionPre-productionWe were quite taken aback by the phenomenal success of the first film, particularly in America. We saw an opportunity to make a second film that already had a built in audience. We thought it would be a great idea to try and satisfy that audience again. In 2003, plans for the film were conceived after the international success of 28 Days Later. Danny Boyle, Andrew Macdonald and Alex Garland stated that they felt the time was right to make a sequel.[2] In March 2005, Boyle said in an interview that he would not direct the sequel due to commitments to Sunshine, but he would serve as executive producer. He also revealed that the film would revolve around a great deal of the aftermath from the first movie.[3] It was also revealed that the film would include the "US Army declaring the war against infection had been won, and that the reconstruction of the country could begin."[4] Boyle hired Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to helm the project after seeing Fresnadillo's 2001 film Intacto.[5] Fresnadillo stated that he was "thrilled working on his first English language film alongside such an exciting international cast and talented production team."[6] Both Fresnadillo and Lopez-Lavigne were involved in writing the script, which revolved around a family and what happened to them in the aftermath of the original film, which the producers "liked a lot".[7] Casting detailsBoyle said in March 2005 that the sequel would feature a new cast, since previous cast members Cillian Murphy, Megan Burns, and Naomie Harris were occupied with their own projects.[3] On 23 August 2006, Jeremy Renner was announced to portray Doyle, one of the principal characters for 28 Weeks Later.[8] On 31 August 2006, Harold Perrineau was announced to portray a US Special Forces pilot in the film.[9]FilmingOn 1 September 2006, principal photography for 28 Weeks Later began in London[10] with much of the filming taking place at Canary Wharf.[11] |

The target audience for this film will be teenagers from ages 13-16, 17-19 , older audiences in there early 20's and sci fi fans. Most teenagers would really be able to recognize with the characters in this movie because it is set in a place where most teenagers within London live, Council estates. Instantly we think that the class of the target audience are lower/middle class as they may be receiving welfare help, both parents may be in full time occupation or they may be living with a guardian. They refer to the location of the council estate as "the ends" which in fact is a slang term used across major part of London's council estates. This also reaches the target audience as teens from working/middle class council estates tend to be influenced by slang language because its such a huge part of urban society. The council estate is actually located in Brixton, which at a certain period was a very rough, the roughest place in London, notoriously known for its gang culture it is less talked about now because people are just so used to the typical idea of Brixton that only people who are involved in crime, have no education and live off welfare live there when in fact that isn't the case at all.
This movie has many conventions of a typical conventions of boys who come from south London. However they break those conventions with the story line and the characters.
The costumes used in this movie represent different characters and identity so the target audience know who to relate to as well as teaching a lesson to go with the story and the meaning.
This film used the studio:Canal films, Uk film council,Big talk pictures, Film4 Productions. All of the listed are well known institutes within Britain who have high repuations based on their films in the past. This will automatically attract attention from the public as UK films are not as recognized as Hollywood because of there high influence and there hard establishment within the world, especially Britain.
On its opening theatrical weekend in the UK in May 2011, Attack the Block garnered £1,133,859, putting it in third place only slightly behind American blockbusters Thor and Fast and Furious 5; also in the opening weekend Attack the Block had the highest cinema site average by almost twice of the other films. On a screen-by-screen basis, Attack the Block was the week's strongest performer. The North American theatrical run began in July 2011 and was only a limited release, yet despite being shown for less than two months and in only 66 cinemas at its peak, the film grossed $1,024,175 (£659,040) on its American theatrical run.
Attack the block had a budget of £8 million pound and made £3,831,475.
In America they managed to gross $1,024,175
(£659,040) after only 2 months in 66 theatres it managed to
gross that much at the films peak.
The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the UK on 19 September 2011,[21] and in the US on 25 October 2011. In the category of Action, Adventure and Comedy on the website Amazon.com, Attack the Block is currently #59 on the DVD bestsellers list.
Getting the target audience to interact gives them a sense of inclusion as if they are apart of something bigger which Maslow referred to as the aspire.

Social media has highly effected the way in which the distributors of movies target there audience.
Because the target audience for this movie is fairly young and is brought up amongst new technology it is more likely that the target audience will find out of this film through the internet via social networking sites (facebook, twitter, youtube).
With social networking sites like this it is very easy to "share" things. This is known as viral marketing.
This is the reason why the distributor sets up things like this so that the target audience spread it amongst eachother eventhough we see advertising every where, were more likely to consume things are friends are consuming being most people follow a trend.
Getting the target audience to interact gives them a sense of inclusion as if they are apart of something bigger which Maslow referred to as the aspire.
This movie was distributed by by StudioCanal UK formerly known as Optimum Releasing. It is a film distributor for both the uk and Ireland. However it is apart of a bigger french brand which releases over 200 films a year.
A succesful British film that was distributed by studio canal is the awakening who had a £.3.1 million budget and manage to gross £2.9 million in box office. It was a successful film as it was opened at the Toronto international film festival which must have been such an honor only increasing studio canals credibility.
The whole film was filmed in South London so it was a bit more economical as they didn't have to film in other countries where as hollywood movies do in order to boost how professional it may be depending on the film.
Although most of the actors are not world renown the british audience can still relate to them as it is of course a british film. For the american audience its a change as it is not as mainstream as they are used to in Hollywood. It is also good because the teenagers that were cast in the film actually came for public schools within estates and auditioned for the place so it makes the film more realistic.
One of the most notable actors are Nick Frost who plays in Hot fuzz, Shaun of the dead and the latest Paul. Joddie whitiker is also starring and is known for her roles of st trinians as the receptionist. Both the british audience and loyal american audience will know this if they are very big and dedicated fans.
Merchandise is also used to boost advertisement as fans may where them and that might attract more people to investigate the spread of the trend. Its almost like a fashion trend every one wants to be aware of the latest films the same way they do clothes.
Merchandise is also used to boost advertisement as fans may where them and that might attract more people to investigate the spread of the trend. Its almost like a fashion trend every one wants to be aware of the latest films the same way they do clothes.
Review websites are also a way of advertising as people give there opinion of the film which astroturfs to other people. This helps boosts the films notibilty. It helps if the review is good so its positive advertising. Websites such as imdb help as they are a famous website who offer the people the choice to rate the movie.

doc in suit= professional, high class, accent very standard english
others very casual working class citizens+ naieve innocent
music marching pace, creates suspense, comedy, leading to police should be professional but just as naieve as they havent experienced urban life where as doc is more sophisticated
doc once started as insider, due to change of surroundings, he has become and outsider, ironically has always been the outsider as he strives for more intellectually where as the other small town people prefer simple life.
This programme seems to be located down south in the suburbs of Britain, perhaps Cornwall as it is located in the coast and the accent contributes.
Its very small town, and everyone is very close, neighborly, innocent, they know nothing more than what they have been taught where as the doctor thinks he knows better and undermines everyone becuase of his higher education and his thrive to learn more.
props such as cars represent class and regional identity as the doctor has a more higher class car than the average citizen from that part of Britain perhaps showing us as the audience that he will not allow himself to adapt to that sort of living as he is so used to the more urban materialistic idea. This also allows the audience to contrast him and his surroundings allowing us to see where people rank in this subliminal hierarchy.
Ironically even though the doctor thinks he knows better because of his obvious high education the people of that village also think they know better because they know how things run around, so they have more instinctual power where as the doctor has intellectual power.
On a whole the regional identity is presented as innocent, relaxed, old fashioned but because its a comedy many aspects have been used to change what we associate with areas by the coast.
Doctor Martin is quite a misogynistic character at times but however we find this quite funny as his misanthropic behaviour compared to the innocent native people of this village clash and make us laugh but also make us capture how innocent people still are in suburban areas of Britain which with our daily life's in the capital forget or never get to experience it. Compared to other characters, Doc martin is portrayed as a very smart man. We can see this by his dress sense as he is always well presented with a smart suit. Considering we find this funny as he is working in a small town doctor which we as cosmopolitan people wouldn't find a big deal how ever the small towers consider it an honorable position as it is one of the small amount of jobs that need high education to be done. Doc martin however uses this to his advantage as he knows its not a big of a job as a surgeon perhaps but he still fools the locals by the way he talks, thinking hes more superior. Automatically we think that regional identity is quite naive as if they live in a wander land where they are so pure hearted and the cruelest of people try to damage there spirit.
doc in suit means professional, high class. His accent very standard english whereas others are more cornish making them seem more vulnerable as the power of accent in our country plays a huge role as to how we can interpret people.

doc once started as insider, due to change of surroundings, he has become and outsider, ironically has always been the outsider as he strives for more intellectually where as the other small town people prefer simple life.
When the doc see's the dog his facial expressions turn sour, instantly we can see he destests the dog very much, the music contributes to us knowing this as it is in minor key and it is in 4/4 which creates a marching pace. This helps create rythm as he is making his way to the police station; another location which is highly respected by the locals. We start off with doc martins face in a close up shot in order to help us see the true emotions in his face then eventually the tracking receeds to allow us to see his location and instantly we laugh because we see a contrast with a serious highly educated doctor in a small town with a dog in his hand and we just cant take him seriously. This makes the region look more strong as nature has beaten this highly educated man who thinks he cant be broken. Unlike the doc, the police officer is also a born and breed resident of the village so like the other citizens he to highly respects the doctor. However the doctor is so self centered he doesnt realise this.
Through out this 5 minute screening we as the audience are exposed to a great amount of techniques. From camera angles all the way to mise en scene in order for us to be able to identify regional identity and how it contrasts with those whom in particularly are not from those areas but adapt to the conditions and region in which they now live. The region this drama comedy is based in is in the suburbs of Britain, perhaps Cornwall on the coast because of the dialect and accent of the english from the small town citizens.
At the opening scene we have the doctor and his mother. Now from the costume we can clearly see that the doctor is of a higher education and higher social class where as his mother is from the working class. Also we have a long shot which informs the audience of the doctors surroundings. We then automatically contrast the doctor with his surroundings and instantly being able to see what region he was from and the region he is now in. Ironically his mother is in the opening scene but she manages to blend in with the surroundings mainly because her dress sense is that of a typical farm woman who we wouldn't notice as odd. This allows us to see that the doctor was once of that culture but has over time become an outsider.
Mid shot, long shot and tracking are highly used to convey regional identity as it allows us to enter and exit the life of ordinary people. We are able to see the entire surroundings of both the doc and the woman in the ending scene.
In this scene we see sense some sort of irony because the woman here considers herself greater than people in the village and therefore greater than her surroundings.
We associate the country side near the coast with sweet, kind, helpful hospitable people however using her character it completley minipulates the scene. Lighting is used to make the region look very joyful because it is very light and bright with clear skys, as if every day is a happy day and we would want to live there which refers to what we would normal conatate with areas such as this. We start off with mid shot of the doc walking with a point of view angle to get us as the audience involved like were there then tracking goes forward to show the docs movement then the woman enters the scene. We then have a close up of the pairs conversation just so we seem a little nosy. We then take into account that we being put in the shoes of any other average small town citizen. This is telling us that people from a small county like to know all the gossip no matter who's business it may be.

This is telling us that people from a small county like to know all the gossip no matter who's business it may be.
The lighting through out this clip is very consistant, it's pretty much the same through out Except the dim lighting when the doctor enters the practise to find the father and son fixing the sink. Instantly we think we've entered a lesson intelligent atmosphere because the lighting has dimmed. However when we see the doc he's always positioned by the window where most of the lighting is produced is always by his face so it portrays him as some how this regions saviour.
Essay 2
In the first 5 minutes of this scene we are introduced to many techniques in this TV programme in order to make it a successful comedy drama series. It allows us to fully digest its meaning and enjoy it. We see a number of aspects as to how it portrays regional identity. From its non diegetic sound to the settings.
We start off with a birds eye view by the coast, a cliff side is being approached by a very small plane. We immediately see from the plane that it is an inner flight, not international, heading to a very small county in Britain as Britain is notoriously known for its white Cliffside coasts. Just from this technique alone we get a hint that the region we are about to be introduced to is very small, traditional, and less populated. Tracking is used to escort the air plane just so we can keep track of where the plane is going. The plane signifies for a new start for the doctor; the main character in this series.
After the tracking has passed the music begins just to let us know what is going to happen next and we quickly cut to the docs face at first from a long shot and then slowly we zoom in to see the full emotion in his face. We can tell by his emotions that he's not a very suburban man and is more of an inner city man who looks very smug, misogynistic and misanthropic.
While the doc is on the plane he seems to be examining the woman next to him, who we soon find out is interviewing him as the gp in the town. We enter this using a full long shot at mid angle so we see the distance of the two people. This distance symbolizes the distance both literal, hierarchal and socially. These two come from completely different up bringing's and areas. When Lewisa starts talking we just know from the accent that she is more country then we would have originally anticipated especially because she's with the doctor so we as the audience would automatically think that two has come from the same region originally.
The doctor and Lewisa both have smart clothing on. However lewisa clothes are more relaxed where as the doc is always in suits and ties. This makes him look more prestigious and formal where as Lewisa is a more relaxed character that comes across as confident. We then think as the audience by first impressions that most of the people we are about to in counter are less troubled by how they come across physically i.e clothing because they feel more comfortable with themselves where as in the city we're always worried with our appearances and how people will judge us because there's just so many opinions to keep up with and so many pressures.
The long shot of that some what medieval building allows us to contrast the different classes. It also makes us think as we wouldn't think isolated place are rich but in fact they are more prestigious than we think. The building is in the middle of the frame, in the back we have the sea. As the music goes on, in continues into a smooth cut of the doc talking to a group of people. This is known as a motivational cut, done on purpose so we know what is going to happen.
Most of the sound is this scene is that of synchronous sound. There's hardly any voice overs, some off screen sounds. When each person takes time talking they use a sort of bouncy cutting rhythm to create a fast pace, as if we were actually in the scene.
I however find it quite ironic that Lewisa is the only person out of a group of people who look like they have some authority over the town to actually be from the area which is being discussed.
The rest seem to have very standard, London accents. The dielects vary through out the five minutes. We see a clash between the accents and the costumes. Those who are from places such as London are seen in suits to represent the typical middle class business worker and the highly educated from that small village in smart but casual clothes. We think of the region as a very small town where everyone has to fight to break free but most settle down for the average life e.g having a family and owning a small business. Woman like Lewisa on the other hand break that typical convention of how we view places such as Portwenn.
We then continue to the scene which we are introduced to the actual village. This is the turning point for the doc as there is know turning back. We are introduced with factors such as the non diegetic sound of the major key music to go with the weather which is sunny but cloudy as well creating a sort of jolly, happy typical British day. This makes the region seem more familiar and homely as is we are not strangers and we have been here before. We have a birds eye view of the seagull which is ironic because its as if we are greater than the bird its self there for putting us in a superior position, perhaps of the area as well as people who may be watching this come from a more urban area. The voice over of the seagulls join the scene to make it flow better.
The lighting through out, is mostly bright, conotating that this isa very innocent area where nothing could go wrong. However when we are introduced to the small village we come in contact with a few promiscuous characters who then remind us of the city. Instantly we think that no matter where we are, even the most un expected places, there's still trouble. For example we see in the close up tracking, a smug look on that mid aged woman leaving the shop and shortly after being followed by the young man.

analysis on marketing of movie: Gravity.
Through out the last 2 weeks I have been introduced to the film Gravity through things such as social networking sites, advertising via public transport, bill boards and various other ways.
The distributors of this movie are Warner bros brothers who have a very highly respected, established status in the movie industry for producing phenomenal movies such as Lord of the rings, Man of steel and much more.

This film is starring 2 well known actors; George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, both notoriously known for their roles in many famous films. The fact they are in this film with there reputation helps boost advertisement as we know it will be a very good, enjoyable film due to the actors mostly advertised. In addition the
I first came across this movie when I was exploring YouTube for a clip and it came up as a 1 minute 30 sec ad I wasn't aloud to skip it so therefore I was forced to watch it and at the end I quite enjoyed it because it was very dramatic, they had fast cuts and cliff hangers which made me want to go to the cinema and continue watching it. This is a good way of advertising because it is targeting a wide age range, but imparticular the young because they only advertise it in specific clips for example I was searching top boys when it came up, a young drama for teens.
This film is also rated 12a which allows us to see what sort of young audience they are targeting. In general, the ages 12-18 will watch it because it is very high tech and belonging to sci fi genre, it intrigues youngsters even more because we are more naïve looking for a thrill.
I have also seen it publicized on buses which will be a good technique because everyone, especially teenagers will be able to have access to this sort of buses.
The release dates for the countries: US, UK, Australia, Venice are:
- August 28, 2013 (Venice)
- October 3, 2013 (AU)
- October 4, 2013 (US)
- November 8, 2013 (UK)
The budget for this movie is:
Budget: 100 million USD
Although they spent this amount of money which may be a bit less then other massive franchises they managed to get a staggering $479,286,000. Gravity opened at number one in the United Kingdom at £6.23 million over the first weekend of release
"Hollywood movie distributors spend about $4 billion a year to buy paid advertising (30-second TV commercials, newspaper ads, etc.) and over half that total is placed on broadcast and cable TV, which are the main vehicles for advertising movies to audiences. TV is effective because it is an audio-visual medium – like film – and can deliver a vast audience quickly, which is crucial because films typically don’t linger in theaters more than 4–6 weeks, according to Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition"- source wikipedia
This amount is enough to both produce it and advertise it. In the end they will earn more then they initially spent with all the cinemas screenings, dvd's sold, interviews, merchandise etc.

Another way in which they advertise this movie is getting reviews from very notable, highly respected newspapers and article such as the guardian who are notoriously non for their reviews on buses.
In addition this film would be a successful movie because it involves things that are very current in time for example issues in outer space such as complications with space ships, Apollo 13 etc. We are very curious to see what happens outside space as we cannot reach it, it's out of our boundaries.
It was filmed in a number of places. Gravity had a production budget of $100 million and was filmed digitally on multiple Arri Alexas. Principal photography on the film began in late May 2011.[31] Live elements were shot at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom.[32] The landing scene was filmed at Lake Powell, Arizona.[33] Visual effects were supervised by Tim Webber at Framestore in London.

Social networking sites such as twitter helps advertise this movie as the # becomes a trend creating a more popular topic to discuss on twitter. For example if someone were to give a good review of it, then hash tagging it, someone else may see this via a re-tweet and will want to investigate this even more.
every movie has a shelf life in which they get as many people prepaid for the release date as possible, so the more publicity they can offer the better the turn out will be. For example gravity came out on the 4th of October 2013. I saw this film being advertised a good couple of weeks before the release date to create suspense amongst the public. Little do we know that with social networking sites we are astroturfing, some one may share a clip off you tube on to facebook and immediately you can get over a 100 views under 10 minutes. The likes people get then go onto other news feeds creating viral marketing; marketing in which people are exposed to the product, decide they like it and therefore recommend it to someone else. Its almost like a zombie strain, they bight you and release the product.
This is a good way of advertising because it is a never ending cycle, people will always see the comments people have made. In general the internet is widely used to advertise as it is a whole other world in which the young target audience spend most of there time of, it is accessible at the tip of a finger.
Interviews have also been hosted involving Sandra bullock, the director and astronaut scientisit mike massimino.
This is a good way of advertising because many people, especially young use social networking websites e g YouTube. I for example used YouTube on my phone because now we have internet access everywhere, it is very portable. Sandra bullock along with George Clooney have very big reputations when it comes to Hollywood screens. Just on this interview alone we see 111,871 views and 789 likes, those likes will then be astroturfed to you on your news feed with out you knowing.

Sound analysis on Halloween (2007)
Sound analysis of Haloween
In the exquisite movie Halloween, directed by Rob zombie, we are introduced to a vast variety of sounds all in which bind together in order to create a spacific mood and atmosphere. From diegetic sound, non diegetic sound, film music, voice overs and many other techniques which all connect to create what most horror movie intend on making; suspense.
At the start of the movie we are introduced to the mayers family and immediately we feel intimidated because on the non digeric sound of the heavy metal rock music. This is relevant because we know immediately that the scene is based in the 70's along with the helpful sub titles and typical costumes.
We can see immediately that the family is that of a lower class working family due to the way they act and the language they us. We then hear a baby crying in the background which adds more intensity to the scene as it builds up more noise and makes us as the audience feel more adgitated simply because in human nature we all feel as an instinct to take care of babies, it would be In humane to not take care of a helpless life.Instantly we know from all the sounds we are hearing that this movie isn't going to be a happy pleasant movie.
We then reach the scene where Michael mayers is in the school toilet and at first it is silent besides him using the toilet which is most likely to be a voice over. The silence is then broken by nonsynchronized sound of the boys bursting in and discussing issues of the day. It begins from non diegetic sound to diegetic as we see who are speaking. Gradually is Michael is aware of who is in the toilet who goes to leave but becomes some what caught up In the middle of these 2 bullies. Most of this scene uses synchronous sound besides times when the baby is crying or when they are yelling at eachother from different rooms. This is known as offscreen sound. We as the audience would take the film more seriously because it's as if we were actually in the scene when they use offscreen sound.
Little do they know that although they are the typical antagonists they had a bigger problem on their hands. We are aware of this as the music begins in a sort of crescendo slowly creeping on us revealing more about micheals personality. It's in a minor key so eventually we know that this movie isn't going to be some what joyful. In addition it also creates a sense of dramatic irony because we know for a fact that in the real world bully's will always be bully's, for a moment we sympathize with Michelle character but then we remember what is about to become of this angelic boy. When the boys walk in they kick the bin which creates synchronous sound as it is in the scene and not edited in. When he is taken by the head teacher the voice if the mother starts as a voice over while she is walking then cuts straight to her talking to the principle, so it starts non diegetic and ends diegetic. This makes the scene more dramatic so we don't become bored as quickly.
When the principle explains to the mother along with the physiologist what they have found in micheals bag the music slowly begins to crescendo in order to foreshadow what horrors we will discover in micheals bag. This is very useful within the scene because it's communicating with the audience making them more apart of the scene as if they are their witnessing the atrocity.
Rob zombie favourited using the theme tune of Halloween several times in the movie in order to make sure he created some momentom in our heads. The film music is now embedded in our head. When Michael realisise that his mum, head teacher and physcyologist know what is going on the theme music immadiatley goes off as he runs away then a voice over of the physcyologist speaking carries on both offscreen which is created via voice over so we know what is to become it this little boy. This creates a sinister atmosphere as we see a cute, innocent little boy being portrayed as the anti Christ. The music is repatative just like micheals terrible habits of killing animals and soon people as we learn. It creates a sense of continuity as if nothing will ever be able to stop Michael from killing once he starts.

-Sound BRIDGE
-SONIC FLASHBACK
-Diegetic sound
-Non diegetic sound
-Direct sound
-nonsimultaneous sound
-offscreen
-VOICE OVER
-SYNCHRONOUS SOUND
-POSTSYNCHRONIZATION DUBBING
Definition
- Sound bridge is the bridge that either leads a scene into another scene to create a different sort of atmosphere or it could be a scene finishing.
-This is a technique used to create a sort of flashback using sound that was once diegetic at a period of time in the film but now is non diegetic over pictures to create a flash back.
-Diegtic sound is used in the scene where you can see where the sound is coming from.
-A sound that isnt visable in the scene e.g film music.
-The sound that we hear in the scene.
-Diegetic sound that comes from a source in time either earlier or later than the images it accompanies
-Simultaneous sound from a source assumed to be in the space of the scene but outside what is visible onscreen
-When a voice, often that of a character in the film, is heard while we see an image of a space and time in which that character is not actually speaking.
-Sound that is matched temporally with the movements occuring in the images, as when dialogue corresponds to lip movements
- The process of adding sound to images after they have been shot and assembled
effect
-This helps create a different sort of mood within the audience to fit the purpose of the scene
-This creates a sort of climax or intense atmosphere amongst the audience to get them thinking about the situation the characters are in.
-This gives more detail as to whats happening with in the scene, if we couldnt hear the piano playing we'de think the director was trying to put us in the shoes of a death person.
-This creates a specific mood according to the sort of music.
-Lets us know whats going on in the film
-creates suspense
The voice over is often used to give a sense of a character's subjectivity or to narrate an event told in flashback.
-It is the opposite of direct sound. It is not, however, the opposite of synchronous sound, since sound and image are also matched here, even if at a later stage in the editing process. Compare the French
example
-Yi Yi (Taiwan, 2000).

Analysis of sinister
In this movie there are many aspects as to how they’ve made it a successful horror movie. Although they use many cliché conventions that have already been done in most horror movies, the director has managed to manipulate the scene to make it more intense and horrific. In the particular scene I’m analyzing it uses various techniques to make the audience think everything is good where deep down we all know that something bad is going to happen to the innocent family.
At the start of the scene we have quick and sharp cuts between the father picking up the recording and the lights switching off. Now we don’t really know what the recording is about. All the director lets us know is that it’s the “lawn work”.This makes the audience think nothing of it as in nothing suspicious to it but as we continue to watch nothing is as it seems. The quick cuts create a fast, dangerous, deadly pace which sets a more sinister mood and makes the audience think something is coming and something is coming fast. The camera then slowly moves up towards the fathers face to let the audience know what sort of emotions he is feeling as he finds this recording in the new house he’s just bought. Although we don’t know what the recording beholds, we can sympathize with this character because we are also in the same position. This engages the audience and begins to make us question what we would do in that particular situation.
From the father opening the recording we have a cut to the part where he switches off the light. We may think the obvious that you can’t watch an old recordings with the lights on but if we go deeper we realize that light represents hope, security, and in religious terminology if someone were to die they’d say move him to the light because they believe it has a relieving and replenishing feeling whereas with evil we normally connote it with dark colors such as black, grey, red, very powerful grim colors. It’s also in extreme close up to highlight the importance of the light going off. If the light goes off then all hope is lost.
We have an extreme close up and fast cuts at the part where there showing the camera player. This may represent a change from human civilization to the “other” world as we continue watching the “lawn work” scene as one of the horror convention in movies is not being able to see spirits in real life but recordings.
In addition the close up to the button flicking from stop to start very slowly creates an extreme atmosphere amongst us as we are too scared to see what lies behind the rest of the clip, this shows that their is no going back, once you flick that start button nothing will ever be the same. this causes the viewer to feel uncomfortable and almost suffocated as they have no escape but then again that’s the beauty of horror movies you never expect things to happen.
The non-diegetic sounds in the movie work so well in this scene and the movie all together because although it creates tension it doesn’t prepare you for the horrific climax you are about to experience. Especially in this scene where everything is very quiet the sound of a heart beat is just repetitive till you reach the end and you hear the sound of the lawn mower cutting through the victim and a paranormal scream.
The camera work while the scene is playing looks very amateur. At first its very well set and professional then when it cuts to the part where the victims are vulnerable , Its showing us the perspective of the protagonist and puts us in his/hers shoes which makes us feel distressed because it makes us think about what we are capable of and what forces lie beyond that we barley know about.
Because of this we then sympathize with the victims of this clip as we discover their fait after. We wouldn’t expect anyone or anything to go after an innocent family but then again the demon that targets the families is a demon called debuk well known for feasting on childrens souls as it regenerates him and makes him feel youthful and powerful
The lighting in this scene is very significant because its sets a specific atmosphere to get the audience thinking specific things to scare them like what maybe lurking in the dark. We normally associate darkness with supernatural beings, superstious tales and other paranormal activities which is what this film is based on; supernatural beings. Its also very dim in the scene at the beginning because in order for both us and the father to see the "lawn work" it has to be dark or we wont be able to see it and feel the way we are meant to feel which is intense.

Social representation of class in soaps
social representation of class in soaps
Top boy
In top boy we see a lot of characters with different personalities who are all living in the same estate. We witness a lot of conflict from teenagers to grown adults aged between 13 through up to 20 years old. All the characters are represented in different ways to show how class is significant to their hierarchy status within their estate. On a whole, people from top boy are shown as upper working class; some don’t have jobs at all and may be living off the welfare system. This is shown in the trailer of top boys as they start off with the block of flats located in south London which is notorious for having a poor population. The camera works start from a lower point of the block looking up, making the viewer feel insignificant as if there is no escape from this life, the same way the characters feel.
Point of view is also significant as it makes the audience more engaged with the programme on a personal scale.
The fast cuts from London’s iconic sky scrapers to the London’s 'slums' are very powerful because it allows the audience to see how close the wealthy and the poor actually are no matter how hard people try to deny it, poverty is everywhere.
The non diegetic sound also helps create a more young, lower class atmosphere as the beat is very continuous which shows a never ending hell. It is also of an R&B genre and we usually link R&B with things like crime, drugs, dirty money etc. This shows the class being lower as in r&b and rap people tend to express their feelings towards the life they used to live in the slums and ghettos but now they're making money. However they are making money the 'dirty' way which is through selling drugs and living the criminal life. This shows lower class as people in higher class seem to have degrees and diplomas which allow them to continue to get a higher occupation where as these people are living off others bad, unbreakable habits. The scene where the camera works is zoomed in to the drugs is significant as it basically represents survival to these lower class citizens. Although there is a huge minority of lower working class people that manage to make a living there are also characters such as Jason, an 11 year old boy, who literally lives in a sort of modern day favella with his mother who abuses narcotics and alcohol and her abusive boyfriend. This represents the lower class as not very intelligent, therefore not being able to live a normal functional life. This whole drama is following the typical conventions that come with filming in the estates.
In 16;26 of series 2 episode One we can see a huge contrast between a boy from the slums in south london and a grown man with a family in a more wealthier part, perhaps north/west london. The camera work while the boy is in the taxi is significant because their are fast cuts all the way through from where he started to his destination and you can see clearly how his surroundings change from small parks in massive estates to lovley houses with big green parks surrounding the area. The irony of this is that the young boy went to deliver a bag of weed to a "client" who in fact is a high middle class father with a teenage son and a wife. In our society we generally stereotype weed or drug users as uneducated people but in fact some one of that status actually uses it. Also when the young boy enters the house he is told to go to another room. When he enters this room the lighting instantly shines on his face as he sees a lot of books. This lets the audience interpret some sort of innocence within all this criminal and horrid behavior because you wouldn't expect a boy of his age to be doing that but as he comes from a lower class he has to do all he can to be able to afford things any normal kid would desire.
The fact that the boy mentions he recieved a level 5 in his sats makes us think he can go far but sadly becuase of his background and the way he composes him self we must think again if this is even possible. Its saddening becuase its the sad truth that in reality so many kids are bright and talented but the only thing that will always play a big role is there status and there social background.
Another way in which class is shown is the scene where deshayn is being in the police station. The lighting is very dim with him in the spot light which shows the audience they are questioning him about gangs and his role. His solicitor is a female of a Caribbean descent possibly with the same up bringing and education as the man in question only she has moved forward in order to break those barriers within society of who can make it and who cant whereas this man Is still in the same place he was 10 years ago, not making the most of the opportunities given to him. The camera shot is in a close up mode to allow the audience to digest every emotion within the mode. The most intreguing part within the scene is when a police officer asks is sully a mate of yours the camera as at a birds eye angle slowly moving down to show us how hes feeling but also to put us in a more superior place so it gives us the right to some how judge him. She then continues with are you the leader of the summer house 'gang'. he replies with "you lot are obbsessed with gangs init. their is no gangs" she asks "what is there then" he replies "what their is everywhere else, families"
In different eyes their are different interpretations of what family really is. In a world of struggle and hardship in lower classes the family they have are the people they hustle with to get through day by day where as in what should be a far society no one should have to struggle like that. In an upper class society the families of people from estates are in fact gangs because the way they earn money is completely different to that of lets say a doctor or a lawyer. They earn it from drugs but its just the way people were raised and their beliefs that play a huge role in how they compose themselves.
Tracking is extremely used in this drama to be able to let the audience in hail the exact actions and movements in the drama. A part that is still embedded in my mind is when the tracking was following a boy in a hoody who was cycling transporting drugs from one end of the line to another. The fact that while the camera was tracking the boy cycling, it was tracking him behind bars which the audience may interpret as foreshadowing his destiny which is eventually ending up behind the bars of a prison cell if he doesn't stop the way hes going down. It also shows that people in the lower class are still imprisoned because they are not as free to do what they want to do due to the fact that they have certain restrictions money wise hence the reason why they call places like summerhouse estate the ghetto. No one can get out.
The costumes through out this episode allows us to judge where these people rank and how they manage to afford such items. For example at the beginning you have the scene where all the teens are on the stair case having a rap session. Automatically the eyes of the target audience, who would be ranged between 16-20 year olds, attracted to the beanie on one of the older boys in the scene. The brand is called stone island but in slang terms we'd refer to it as 'stoney'. This brand is found in shops such as Selfridges and many other shops in the westend. The westend is notoriously known for its high class, its luxurious shops and lifestyles. Only people who work hard for a living or who come from a high class background could afford such things. Although seeing this brand makes us wander how he managed to afford such an expensive hat, which is obviously from drug dealing, we can see that even certain brands that may cost £100's will still belong to a certain class. In a sense you could actually say low class is the new high class.
On a general the clothes of the actors range depending and who they are and what each character represents. It's ironic because most of them are poor but there is still a hierachy even in the poorest of classes for example Jason is portrayed as the poorest out of all the characters, especially youths, because hes there to represent the maltreated people due to less educated adults in society. He is seen wearing a bomber jacket, which we associate with youths as most are seen wearing this, dirty traksuits because its cheap available cloth , and a pair of worn out trainers. The clothes look like they have been stolen from a homeless person. This creates an ironic atmosphere as the place he lives in is no home.
